The BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) is a regulator and advocate - it protects clients, supports therapists and promotes high standards in counselling and psychotherapy.
The BACP is a professional membership body representing counsellors, psychotherapists and practitioners working in mental health and therapy. They develop and maintain the ethical framework for counselling and psychotherapy, accredits practitioners, training courses and services to ensure quality and professionalism. It also offers professional guidelines that members must follow.
The BACP maintains a public register of qualified and accredited practitioners, handles complaints against members through a professional conduct procedure and ensures safe, competent and ethical practice for clients seeking therapy.
Additional functions include providing training, resources and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for it's members; supporting members with research, networking and career development; promoting the importance of counselling and psychotherapy in society; campaigning for better mental health policy and access to therapy services across the UK.
